Mary Jacobs and LaVerne Thorpe installed as IDWM Executives for Quadrennium 2010—2014

The IDWM Quadrennial Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) met last week and installed new officers, and for the first time in anyone’s memory, two members of the Executive Committee come from a single congregation.

The 2010 Assembly, held every four years in various locales, brings together Disciples women from across the United States and Canada along with nearly two dozen overseas guests. This year nearly two thousand came together in Greensboro, NC to consider the theme “Awake! Awake!”.

The four-day assembly alerted us all to the fact that collective praise, shared wisdom, and joyful service offer our troubled world a stronger witness than any of us can offer on our own.

We will hold them close in prayer as they help set the course for women’s ministries programming as we move into a new decade.  (They are both members of First Christian Church, Mesa, AZ)

LABELS-FOR-EDUCATION

Sonny DeFeo has volunteered to be the liaison: Cut UPC barcodes from Campbell Soup products labels.  We will make available to our church family the “eligible” product labels to be saved.  Labels are brought to church and placed in LABELS-FOR-EDUCATION container.  The UPC barcodes are cut, counted and distributed to Woodhaven, a campus-based school for children with disabilities.

Please see Julie Erickson to offer your help in this worthy opportunity.

Week of Compassion

Week of Compassion Establishes the Women’s Empowerment Fund
Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 09:44AM
When we help to educate a girl, we help her whole family.

To improve the life of one woman is to change the life of an entire community.

This has been proven time and time again.

We already know that successful sustainable development depends on women. Economic and social development around the world, including in North America, depends directly on how we support and empower women.

Yet most women in the world still live on less than $1 a day. Girls are often expected to do manual labor and stay home to help take care of their families and are not given the chance to go to school. Women are not given the same opportunities to be educated and to be in charge of their own lives.

We can change this.

We can make a difference! Together, as Disciples women, we can come together to help change the status and lives of girls and women. We can contribute to their education, training, and empowerment. We can accompany them in a bold way!

Week of Compassion has established the Women’s Empowerment Fund as a way to do just that.

This fund will educate, train, and empower women all over the world and here in North America. The Women’s Empowerment Fund will honor our sisters in need. It will serve as a powerful vehicle for us as Disciples women to channel our joint resources specifically to improve the lives of women.

Individually, you may feel powerless. But coming together and rallying around our sisters, leveraging our resources, starting giving clubs, and committing to improving women’s lives means that every single one of us can have an impact.

The Women’s Empowerment Fund will benefit our partners through Global Ministries, including our efforts to support women in the Congo and the Middle East. It will also benefit our ecumenical partners like Church World Service and Foods Resource Bank, to support girls and women’s programs in the Republic of Georgia, Serbia, and India. Through all of our Disciples and ecumenical partners worldwide, Week of Compassion’s Women’s Empowerment Fund will change the lives of women.

General Information

About Disciple Women Ministries

Our Purpose

To provide opportunities for spiritual growth, enrichment, education and creative ministries to enable women to develop a sense of personal responsibility for the whole mission of the Church of Jesus Christ.

All Women of First Christian Church are members of the DWM.
No need to join.

We have small group meetings once a month (September through May) called Circles. We have fellowship, study and worship. We have four circles designed to accomodate the various schedules of the women of the church.

One group meets in the evenings:
Adelphi - Second Tuesday of each month, 7:00 pm in the home of a member.

Two groups meet during the day:
Dorcas -Second Tuesday of each month, 9:30 am in the Arizona Room
Ruth - Second Thursday of each month, 12:00 pm in the Arizona Room

We all meet together several times a year at general meetings held on Tuesday evenings or Saturday mornings.  These gatherings are called:  Girls' Nite Out or Girls' Morning Out.

We emphasize service and outreach.

We support many church programs as the women of the church. The greatest portion of our budget goes towards world wide mission projects (through The Disciples of Christ - Church Finance Council).

We provide support for families when a death occurs by either providing food, time or support.

Service Projects we're involved with:

Vista Del Camino

We support Vista Del Camino with food, clothing and monetary contributions. The center is located in South Scottsdale and works with the area families in need. Annually, CWF sponsors two or more families for Thanksgiving and Christmas

Crop Walk

Church World Services works in partnership with indigenous organizations in more than 80 countries to support sustainable self-help development, meet emergency needs and help address the root causes of poverty and powerlessness.

For more information, see the
Church World Services website.

CHRYSALIS SHELTERS - for victims of domestic violence

We collect items for the shelter on a monthly basis. The circles rotate the delivery donations. Donated items can be placed in the blue barrel located in the closet of the Arizona Room.

HAGAR Project
"Helping Abused Grow and Recover"

HAGAR is more than the acronym. It is the name of the biblical woman who was abused. Genesis 16 and 21 tell the story of Hagar, given as a concubine to Abraham, abused by Sarah and eventually cast out into the desert with her child. Family Violence includes sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. HAGAR represents the victims of abuse in every generation.
